What Beginners Need to Fence

In addition to a good attitude and a dose of patience, there are several things a fencer needs to actually fence. While equipping oneself for a competition is a little more involved, to get started one just needs fencing jacket, mask, glove and practice weapon. Foil, sabre or epee are the main fencing weapons.
If you are new to the sport, most organizations will offer “loaner” fencing equipment during your initial training sessions. After you have mastered the fundamentals, you will be ready to purchase some fencing gear. Two possibilities exist for the newcomer.
The first is to procure individual items one at a time until you have a full set and the second solution is to buy a starter kit. These fencing starter kits have all the basic requirements items pre-assembled and sold as a bundle. You have the list of equipments that you require, but now what? Before you really purchase anything or start using your new equipment, it’s a good plan to have a basic understanding of the capability and purpose of each.
It is very crucial that you make sure that the fencing jacket that you choose is made of high quality materials to ensure that you are given the adequate protection that is of utmost importance. You will find that the United States does not have a particular standard minimum constraint, but Europe does have a required standard. Olympic fencing carries a higher requirement, as does any international tournament.
When you are just beginning the basic equipment will more than suffice. The main choices you will be making in this regard are whether to go with cotton or synthetic materials. Cotton is heavier and hotter in use, but is also cheaper. The synthetic materials are of a lighter weight, but they are more expensive.
The mask is also important for protection, and you must have one that has a good fit, good interior padding, and doesn’t press on the top of the head or on the chin. While there are non-electric gloves available for purchase, it is better to select a glove with cuff which can be used in electric fencing.
To easily attach the body cord to an electric weapon, use a cuff like this one. They come in all standard sizes and can also be obtained as gloves. This will give you an enhanced fit, but the cost will be higher. In order to thrust, the foil is used. It has an extremely slender blade and a round or foiled edge. When striking your adversary, the blade of the foil bows so that you do not hurt anyone.
