How overpronation Affects Your Sports Performance

Frequent and continued incolvement in organized sports or other high-imtensity physical activities can put you at risk for shin splints, knee pain, Achilles tendonitis, and other lower body injuries. Medial tibial stress syndrome, as it is referred to by the Mayo Clinic, is a pain that runs down the length of the shin bone and is caused by excessive stress on the bones, muscles, and ligaments of the lower extremities. This stress is typically caused by running activities in many settings, and can be exacerbated by flat feet and insufficient arch support.

Many sports therapists recommend using ice, resting from running or sports, and using proper shoes, preferably with the use of orthotic  insoles designed specifically for sporting activities. Applying ice to the shin and supporting structures in the lower leg helps relieve pain,  while lessening the amount of swelling soon after an injury. Rest is always recommended because it allows for the bones, tendons and muscles to repair themselves. Finally, using proper shoes can drastically help prevent re-injury to the lower legs and feet by providing better cushioning and arch support. This allows for proper foot balance to return and helps it to absorb shock. Sports orthotics can significantly enhance performance and endurance, because they offer arch support and additional cushioning. For people who already need plantar fasciitis treatment, these special sports insoles raise the arch appropriately and realign the lower body.

Over-pronation caused by flat feet can cause more than just shin splints to occur. Plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, knee, ankle, and low back pain, as well as Achilles tendonitis can be caused by flat feet. If sports insoles are not utilized during strenuous sports activities, re-injury and major foot pain can ensue. The mechanics involved in these problems are linked to the plantar fascia tendon, which is the main structure involved in the foot arch. It is an elastic structure that stretches to absorb the shock triggered when the foot carries our body weight during sports activity. In people with flat feet, this tendon has been over-stretched and has lost its lengthening abilities. Its ability to absorb shock has left completely. This situation also causes over-pronation of the foot, or the tendency for the ankles to roll toward the center of the body. As a result, the weight of the bdy is abnormally concentrated on one region rather than being evenly distributed over the full area of the foot. This is how sports orthotics  can make all the difference in cases of flat feet and other foot conditions; they provide stability and cushioning in the right places.
