Makeup for the Country Girl Look

By admin | September 17, 2009

So you’re looking for a new makeup style, but can’t seem to find one that suits you or you haven’t tried before. Why not just keep it simple this time and go for a country look? Many women are trying out country fashion because it’s simple, cheap and sustainable, and often, it takes no more than ten minutes to put together. Country makeup hinges on one of the most time-tested makeup secrets: the simpler, the better. By paring your style down to the essentials, you save yourself a lot of time while still looking your best.

Of course, simple as it is, country makeup still takes a good deal of practice, not to mention some personal taste. While there’s a country look to suit everyone, it’s important to find one that suits you and doesn’t look “forced.” It’s really not that complicated—with a bit of experimenting, you can find a style that works for you in no time. Once you’ve settled on that look, you can use it pretty much anywhere: work, school, parties, a day out on the beach. Here’s a quick country makeup guide to help you get started.

Suit your skin tone

“Natural” is the theme of the day when it comes to country makeup. The goal is to highlight your natural features rather than change them. So start by choosing face makeup that matches your skin tone, instead of making it lighter or darker. Dab a few shades of foundation against your cheek and see which one blends in more naturally. Be sure to try it in different angles and lighting, as these factors can change how the color blends in.

If possible, avoid heavy foundations and matte powders. Instead, go for liquid or gel foundation—they spread on more naturally and feel lighter on the face. If you don’t need a lot of smoothing out, try a tinted moisturizer instead. Since they color and moisturize at the same time, there are fewer layers to put on, which suits the light and carefree theme of country makeup.

Add some highlights

Country makeup makes very little use of color, so you’ll need to highlight your skin to keep it from looking too pale. A good blush or bronzer can give your skin a healthy glow to complement your natural makeup look. Blush usually works best for people with pale or Caucasian skin, while bronzer suits brown or olive skin best. Choose a color that’s just a shade darker than your actual skin tone, enough for it to stand out but not overpower your color.

Apply the blush or bronzer on the apples of your cheeks, then spread out to blend with your foundation. To find the right spot, look in the mirror and smile, then look for the bony part that bulges outward. Start by dabbing color on either side and blending outward. You can use a finger for liquid or gel blush, and a wide brush if you’re using bronzing powder.

Highlight your eyes

Simple, casual makeup often relies on the eyes to bring the entire look to life. That doesn’t mean you have to put all the attention on your eyes; you just have to enhance them so that they’re the first thing people notice. As much as possible, limit the eye shadow and use only eyeliner and eyebrow makeup. This helps keep the color to a minimum while still accenting the natural shape and color of your eyes.

Choose an eyeliner that matches your facial skin tone. Black eyeliner and mascara aren’t the only options around—most companies now offer a range of other shades designed to match different skin colors. Use black only if you have dark or olive skin. Otherwise, you can look into different shades of brown, gray, and even some dark blue. Try out a few color palettes and see which one works for you.

Keep the lips simple

Lipstick is rarely used in country makeup. Since most of the focus is on the eyes, coloring the lips will draw attention away and create an “overdone” look—the exact opposite of what you’re trying to do. If your lips are naturally full and rosy, you can even do away with lip makeup altogether. If you really need to add color, take your cue from summer makeup and stick to natural or nude shades like pale peach, old rose, or a muted pink.

In most cases, a bit of lip gloss is enough to give your lips some volume. Keep it clear as much as possible, but if you have really pale lips, you can go for tinted lip gloss or lip stains. Try not to apply more than one coat. Some lip colors darken as they dry, so wait for it to dry out before dabbing on another layer. If you’re going to be out all day, finish off with some translucent powder to help keep it in place.
