Presbyopia – The Short Arm Syndrome

You have been working on your computer for some time and find that you are not able to focus clearly on the words. You blame your boss and your over worked weekends. You are trying to read the latest best seller and find that you are having difficulty reading. You blame the publisher for trying to cut costs with the small type. If you are in the age group of 40-50 and all the above complaints sound familiar, you may be experiencing an eye condition known as presbyopia. And before you panic over the strange sounding name, it is better to mention that presbyopia is a naturally occurring effect of advancing years and is easily treated by wearing eyeglasses or contact lenses with some even choosing surgery.
Causes of Presbyopia
The focusing capacity of the eye depends on how elastic the lens of the eye is. Gradually, this lens tends to lose its elasticity and it becomes difficult for the eye to focus on close by objects. The most pronounced sign of presbyopia is when you have to hold a book or magazine at arm?s length to be able to focus and read clearly. This condition, while at first annoying, is a natural growth pattern of the eye. The lens is actually losing a little elasticity every day of our lives, it is not until we reach our early forties that we begin to notice the effects.
Treating Presbyopia
Most common methods of treating presbyopia are of course eyeglasses or Reading glasses and multifocal contact lenses.
The eyeglasses used in the treatment of presbyopia are usually bifocal, which means they have two focus points. The upper part of the lens makes it possible to correct one’s nearsightedness or farsightedness while the bottom half is used to help with focusing on nearby objects. Instead of using eyeglasses which have such a sharp separation, progressive addition lenses or PALs can be used. As the name indicates, in this the change from one focus point to another is more gradual, more progressive.
Your eye doctor may even suggest you buy reading glasses for you rather than bifocal eyeglasses. The advantage of using reading glasses is that you can wear them only when you need to work on tasks involving close by objects. You may be wearing contact lenses to correct your farsightedness or nearsightedness but you can still get reading glasses that can be worn over them. Reading glasses are easily available in many retail stores or you may prefer to buy specially designed ones as prescribed by your doctor. The styles available today are varied to appeal to all. Both men?s and womens reading glasses can be purchased over the counter and online in powers up to 3.00. If you find you need stronger correction it is advised that speak with your eye care provider.
Multifocal contact lenses are specially made and prescribed for people suffering from presbyopia. These multifocal contact lenses are available as soft lenses or in the rigid gas permeable variety. Multifocal contact lenses are the equivalent of bifocal eyeglasses or progressive addition lenses, with varying powers in the same contact lens. Multifocal contact lenses are of two types, alternating vision, in which the pupil alternates between various powers as it focuses upwards or downwards and simultaneous vision, in which the eye sees through the different powers at the same time.
While multifocal contact lenses are extremely successful when properly fit, it is still common for wearers to use both contact lenses and reading glasses together. This ensures the contact lenses cover most of the visual areas, but for fine print and small details a pair of low power reading glasses may still be necessary.
Despite the proven success of reading glasses, bifocal eyeglasses and multifocal contact lenses, surgical procedures are also favored by many because that may avoid the use of glasses and contact lenses completely.
Surgical procedures include NearVision CK treatment and even insertion of intraocular lenses to correct presbyopia.
Your final choice of how to deal with presbyopia will depend on your level of comfort with the results that corrective measures achieve.
